Typography

A research book on type — classification, anatomy, and history — designed, printed, and bound by hand.

Objective

An OCAD University editorial project: research and organize the history and classification of typefaces — script, blackletter, serif, sans-serif, and Chinese type — into a single printed reference.

Approach

Type as structure: a strict grid governs every chapter opener, annotated letterform diagrams sit on full-bleed black pages, and a red key-line marks every construction detail. The book was printed and bound by hand.

The Book

Printed and bound by hand

A soft-cover perfect-bound edition, cover type set in a single condensed serif over a matte black ground.

The finished book, printed — cover and a Cubism reference spread from the closing chapter.
